Gen Z Is Leading the Backlash Against a TikTok Ban. A Generational Divide Is Coming.
Congressional hearings aren’t a typical must-watch for members of Gen Z, but the March 23 grilling of TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew appears to have been an exception. On the same day that Congress marched through its five hours of questioning, TikTok began flooding with videos skewering lawmakers’ queries as clueless about the app, and technology in general. TikTokers zeroed in on questions about whether the platform was tracking the dilation of users’ pupils or accessing home Wi-Fi and mercilessly mocked members of Congress who stumbled over terms like algorithm and GPS, and, in one unfortunate case, referred to the app as “Tic Tac.”
