ADNOC Onshore has awarded a $920m (Dh3.38bn) engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract to Jereh Oil & Gas Engineering for the extension of its AI-powered well digitalisation programme.

As part of the contract, Jereh Oil & Gas Engineering will install advanced remote sensing and well operating equipment at the Bab, Bu Hasa and Southeast onshore fields to enable remote monitoring wells.

Due for completion in 2027, the well digitalisation programme will facilitate the remote monitoring and control of more than 2,000 wells.

The digitalisation effort has already been implemented in the Mender and Qusahwira onshore fields, as well as in the Northeast Bab field, which has been ADNOC’s pioneering ‘smart field’ since 2006.

This technological advancement is expected to elevate operational efficiency and safety by minimising downtime and optimising well performance.

The programme encompasses digital control valves, instrumentation and additional hardware that will transmit real-time operational data from embedded sensors in wells and pipelines directly to control rooms via ADNOC and e&’s extensive private 5G network.

It will offer an immediate overview of key variables such as temperature and pressure, thereby enabling AI-powered tools such as AIQ’s RoboWell solution to autonomously manage the wells in real-time.

ADNOC Upstream executive director Abdulmunim Saif Al Kindy said: “This award will accelerate our well digitalisation programme and the automation of our operations, supporting our goal to become the world’s most AI-enabled energy company.

“As we harness the power of industry-leading technologies to further optimise our operations, we are ensuring that we continue to drive significant value back into the UAE economy and the substantial in-country value generated by this award will further catalyse industrial growth opportunities for the private sector.”

In a parallel development, ADNOC and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) have entered into a strategic collaboration agreement (SCA) with Microsoft, focusing on AI and low-carbon initiatives within the UAE and globally.

The agreement targets current energy system decarbonisation and fosters a sustainable energy future.

The SCA includes assessments of powering Microsoft’s data centres with renewable energy via Masdar, in which ADNOC is a stakeholder.

The AI initiative helps ADNOC in achieving its Net Zero by 2045 ambition and its goal of near-zero methane emissions by 2030. In 2023, the company’s AI tools have already mitigated a million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions and generated $500m in value.
