Amazon Workers Primed To Strike

According to Bloomberg, workers at an Amazon fulfillment center in Shakopee, Minnesota are planning on a six-hour work strike on July 15, the first day of Prime Day, one of the busiest days of the year for the online retail giant. What’s Going On? Last year, Amazon pledged to pay workers at least $15 an hour, after activists called out the company for not paying liveable wages. This planned strike is a sign that worker unrest still persists within the company, including productivity quotas that many feel lead to a grueling, unsafe work environment, as well as the lack of opportunity for temporary employees to become full-time workers. East African Muslim immigrants at the Minnesota facilities have been advocating for reduced workloads while fasting for Ramadan and the designation of a conference room as a prayer space. What In The World? Amazon worker strikes are common in Europe, where labor unions are generally stronger, with strikes regularly taking place on high profile shopping days such as Prime Day and Black Friday. This planned strike is seen as a sign that Amazon’s American workers are starting to become as emboldened as their European counterparts. What’s The Plan? The Shakopee workers will strike for about three hours at the end of the day shift and the start of the night shift. To show solidarity, some of Amazon's engineers plan to fly to Minnesota to join the demonstrations, and to urge the company to take a stronger stance against climate change. Amazon had no comment on the impending strike. -Michael Tedder Photo: Adobe Read More...
