Epic Games to pay $520M for alleged privacy breach
STORY: The creator of the explosively popular “Fortnite” game will pay $520 million to settle allegations that it illegally collected the personal information of children, and tricked people into making purchases.That’s according to the Federal Trade Commission, which said on Monday that Epic Games will pay $275 million for violating the privacy law and has agreed to adopt strong default privacy settings for young people. The other $245 million will refund consumers duped by so-called “dark patterns” into making purchases they did not intend to make.In a statement, FTC Chair Lina Khan said: “Epic used privacy-invasive default settings and deceptive interfaces that tricked Fortnite users, including teenagers and children.”She went on to say: “Protecting the public, and especially children, from online privacy invasions and dark patterns is a top priority for the Commission.”
