Microsoft’s (MSFT, Financials) OpenAI and Anduril Industries have teamed to create and implement cutting-edge artificial intelligence solutions for American and allied military systems. By combining OpenAI’s artificial intelligence models with Anduril’s defense systems to upgrade counter-unmanned aircraft systems, so improving the detection and response to aerial threats and hence strengthening national security.

The alliance tackles changing issues presented by legacy platforms endangering infrastructure and people as well as unmanned systems. Anduril aims to improve situational awareness and lower the load on human operators by using OpenAI’s technologies, so offering real-time responses to hazards. This project coincides with a worldwide competition between the US and China for artificial intelligence leadership as both nations aim to have an advantage in strategic AI application.

Using OpenAI’s AI knowledge, Brian Schimpf, CEO of Anduril, said the alliance will help fill in air defense gaps. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman underlined the need of creating artificial intelligence that guarantees military personnel’s safety and supports democratic values.

With monitoring systems to guarantee ethical deployment, both companies have committed themselves to responsibly creating AI-driven technologies supporting the Department of Defense and Intelligence Community.

This alliance marks OpenAI’s first joint effort with a commercial weapons manufacturer and its most major interaction with the Defense Department. OpenAI had rules prohibiting military application of its AI technology in the past, but new policies allow some partnerships now.

Founded in 2017 by Palmer Luckey, Anduril Industries focuses in autonomous systems and has quickly grown to be a major actor in the defense industry. The company’s valuation has risen to $14 billion after landing big contracts, including an August 2024 $1.5 billion funding round.
