: As the U.S. Open starts, here are the highest-paid tennis players in the world

While payouts for major tennis tournaments are setting records, each athlete in the top-five highest-paid tennis players made more money off the court than on it last year.

Here are the highest-paid tennis players in 2021:

5. Rafael Nadal, $27 million

Nadal has taken time away from tennis this year to heal a foot injury, causing him to miss several tournaments, including this year’s US Open.

Nadal is typically a mainstay on Forbes’s top earning athletes list with 20 Grand Slam men’s singles titles and a sponsorship portfolio that includes Nike NKE, +0.38%, Tommy Hilfiger, Kia 000270, +0.61%, and Richard Mille.

Nadal’s earnings from the past year were $4 million on the court, and $23 million off the court.

4. Novak Djokovic, $38 million

The current No. 1 ranked men’s tennis player in the world by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), Novak Djokovic is looking to be the first person to win the Grand Slam, meaning all four of the major tennis tournaments in one calendar year.

The 34-year-old Djokovic has already won the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon in 2021 — and thus has posted the highest on-court earnings of any player in tennis.

Djokovic’s success on the tennis court was massive, but so was his off-court earnings. Djokovic has partnerships with Lacoste, Asics and Hublot watches, among others.

Djokovic’s earnings from the past year were $8 million on the court, and $30 million off the court.

3. Serena Williams, $41.8 million

Tennis legend Serena Williams has not won a Grand Slam since the 2017 Australian Open, but it’s not hurt her wallet.

As one of the biggest stars the sport has ever seen, she has had no issues accumulating sponsorship deals with Nike, AT&T T, +0.39%, JPMorgan Chase JPM, -1.13%, and the Apple AAPL, +3.03% -owned Beats, among others.

Williams’s earnings from the past year were $1.8 million on the court, and $40 million off the court.

2. Naomi Osaka, $60.1 million

Osaka won the 2021 Australian Open and is currently the No. 3-ranked women’s tennis player in the world, according to the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).

Osaka surpassed Serena Williams as the highest-paid female athlete in the world back in 2020. She has deals with Nike, Sweetgreen, Barbie and Nissan JP:7201, among many others.

Osaka has admitted to struggling with mental health issues recently that have forced her out of some tournaments, even claiming, “It’s O.K. not to be O.K.“

Osaka’s earnings from the past year were $5.1 million on the court, and $55 million off the court.

1. Roger Federer, $90.6 million

Tennis star Roger Federer had a rough year from a tennis perspective after fighting through multiple injuries that precluded him from winning any major tournaments.

But the 40-year-old Federer far outpaces his fellow tennis players when it comes to off-court earnings.

The 20-time Grand Slam winner has deals with Rolex, Credit Suisse CS, -0.80%  and Uniqlo, among many others. He signed a deal with the Japanese company Uniqlo in 2018 that pays him $300 million over 10 years.

Federer is tennis’ highest-paid player for a 16th straight year, according to Forbes, and nearly all of his earnings were made from sponsorships deals.

Federer’s earnings from the past year were $600,000 on the court, and $90 million off the court.
