Australia sues Google over consumer location privacy

Australia’s consumer watchdog is suing Google for allegedly tracking mobile phone users’ location without their knowledge, in the latest in a series of privacy related court cases involving the world’s biggest technology companies. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said on Tuesday that it had begun legal proceedings in the Federal Court, accusing Google of “misleading conduct”. The watchdog said on-screen messages to users of mobile phones and tablets with the Android operating system had failed to properly inform them that their location data would continue to be collected and used even when they had disabled the relevant settings on their Google accounts.
