The Walt Disney Co. announced Monday a five-year exclusive television deal with “Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler, which will include a Wakanda-set series that will stream on Disney+.

“Ryan Coogler is a singular storyteller whose vision and range have made him one of the standout filmmakers of his generation,” Disney Executive Chairman Bob Iger said in a statement. “With ‘Black Panther,’ Ryan brought a groundbreaking story and iconic characters to life in a real, meaningful and memorable way, creating a watershed cultural moment. We’re thrilled to strengthen our relationship and look forward to telling more great stories with Ryan and his team.”

Coogler is currently working on a “Black Panther” sequel movie for Disney DIS, +1.66%, despite the death last year of star Chadwick Boseman. In addition to the Wakanda-set series, as part of the five-year deal, Coogler’s production company, Proximity Media, will get to develop series for other Disney divisions.

Wakanda, of course, is the fictional African kingdom that is home to the superhero Black Panther. The 2018 movie grossed $1.3 billion worldwide.

In December, Disney+ announced an ambitious slate of streaming series in the coming years, including at least 10 Marvel shows. It was unclear when the Wakanda-set series may debut.
