The U.S. Capitol Police chief submitted his resignation Thursday, while the department said reports of an officer’s death are inaccurate.
CNN had reported an officer’s death late Thursday, along with several other news organizations. However, a Capitol Police spokesperson said Thursday night that “Media reports regarding the death of a United States Capitol Police officer are not accurate. Although some officers were injured and hospitalized yesterday, no USCP officers have passed away.”
Four people died in the siege: One woman was shot to death by police and three others died from medical emergencies.
Steven Sund, chief of the Capitol Police, announced his resignation Thursday, after facing blistering criticism for his department’s failure to keep the mob at bay. His resignation is effective Jan. 16.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had called for Sund’s resignation earlier in the day.
Pelosi also announced the resignation of House Sergeant at Arms Paul Irving, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell late Thursday announced the resignation of Senate Sergeant-at-Arms Michael Stenger.
