Houston Texans star quarterback Deshaun Watson’s charity is getting a big boost following his team’s blowout 41-25 win over the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving.
The loss prompted the Lions to fire their head coach, Matt Patricia, two days later, with offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell appointed interim head coach. Many Lions fans were excited about the move.
Some Lions fans gave thanks to Watson, who threw four touchdown passes on the Thanksgiving holiday, by donating $13 to his charity — the $13 donation in “honor” of Patricia’s win total as a coach. Patricia’s record with Detroit was 13-29-1.
According to NFL Network, donations have cleared the $1,000 mark.
Watson’s charity is “dedicated to education, health, housing and other charitable causes that support families and youth in underserved communities,” according to its website.
Watson had a pair of go-ahead touchdown passes in the first half and threw for two more scores in the fourth quarter.
And still, he wasn’t satisfied.
“It was definitely good, but I missed two touchdowns,” Watson said.
He has thrown 15 touchdown passes without getting picked off once in the past six games.
“You’ve got to give some credit to the guys up front,” interim Houston coach Romeo Crennel said. “If they give him time, he’s able to make plays. Guys can get open, and he can hit them. He has that kind of accuracy.”
The Texans (4-7) have won two straight for the first time this season and three of their seven games under Crennel. Detroit under Patricia, in contrast, has suffered four lopsided defeats in the past five weeks, Sports Illustrated noted.
