The fun stuff is getting more expensive during the pandemic.
Yes, U.K. consumer price index growth slowed to 0.8% in April from 1.5% in March, which was a slight bit weaker than the 0.9% growth rise in a FactSet-compiled economist poll. A drop in fuel prices had the biggest impact. The yield on the 10-year U.K. gilt TMBMKGB-10Y, 0.240% slipped to 0.25%, and the British pound GBPUSD, -0.15% also was lower.
But there were certainly areas of price growth during the pandemic, and they seemed to be concentrated in what’s enjoyable.
Of the major categories, recreation and culture had the biggest upward shift.
Prices for items like computer games consoles, preschool activity toys, craft kits, dolls, construction toys, and sit-and-ride toys advanced, as did computer software, CDs and DVDs, and media bought online. Book prices however collapsed by 14.5%.
Also rising — alcohol and tobacco, with whisky prices in particular increasing.
Delivery or takeaway pizza prices shot up 7.3%, and takeaway burger prices jumped 4.6%.
