Former Vice President Joe Biden overtook President Donald Trump in Georgia ballot-counting in the early hours of Friday, as votes continued to trickle into four crucial battleground states.

As of midnight, with about 16,000 votes outstanding, Trump clung to a lead of just 1,800 votes. But a batch of freshly counted votes from Clayton County, a suburb of Atlanta, gave Biden a very slight lead of 917 votes.

While Biden leads, and the trending pattern of votes favors him with remaining Georgia votes, major news organizations did not call Georgia’s race over yet. Still outstanding are up to 8,800 overseas and military votes, which face a Friday deadline to arrive by mail.

The final margin may also be slim enough — less than 0.5% — to trigger a recount. NBC News reported Thursday night that it may take days, even weeks to call Georgia for Biden.

Biden was also poised to take the lead in Pennsylvania. As of midnight, Trump’s lead had shrunk to 0.3% — about 22,000 votes — with 95% of ballots counted. However, 366,000 votes — many from the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh areas — still remain to be counted, and those are expected to heavily favor Biden.

If Biden overtakes Trump in Pennsylvania overnight and manages to pad his lead, news organizations could call the race as soon as Friday morning.

Biden would clinch the White House with either a win in Pennsylvania or a combination of two wins among Arizona, Nevada and Georgia.

Races in Arizona and Nevada are still too close to call, with Biden slightly ahead in both. Officials in those states do not plan on updating vote totals until late morning, Eastern time.
