President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden are crisscrossing the country on Tuesday, with just a week remaining until Election Day and polls tightening nationally and in key battleground states.
Biden is visiting Georgia, a state that hasn’t voted for a Democrat for president since Bill Clinton in 1992. Trump has events in Michigan, Wisconsin and Nebraska. In the Omaha-area district Trump will visit, he and Biden are competing for its single electoral vote. As the Wall Street Journal writes, that vote could play a decisive role in certain Electoral College scenarios.

Polling averages in top swing states including Michigan and Wisconsin still favor Biden, albeit more narrowly than a week ago, according to RealClearPolitics. Polls of Pennsylvania voters favor Biden, though two pollsters described as conservative or GOP-leaning showed Trump ahead or tied of Biden in the Keystone State after last week’s debate.
Biden’s national lead over Trump has narrowed, though the former vice president is still leading by more than seven points.
Speaking in Warm Springs, Ga., Biden said he would act “on the first day” of his presidency, if elected, to control COVID-19. The former vice president will also speak in Atlanta. Trump appears in Lansing, Mich., West Salem, Wis., and Omaha, Neb.
In addition to his in-person appearances, Biden rolled out closing-argument advertisements on Tuesday. In a 60-second ad airing on cable channels and in 16 states, Biden says, “this is our opportunity to leave the dark, angry politics of the past four years behind us.”
Trump is scheduled hold 11 rallies in the final 48 hours before polls close, according to the Associated Press.
U.S. stocks DJIA, -0.64% SPX, -0.19% COMP, +0.51% were mixed at midday Tuesday, giving up some early gains, with investors continuing to monitor rising COVID-19 cases.
