The box office is expected to enjoy a strong performance this weekend, as three new releases pull in cinemagoers, while the live-action “Aladdin” continues to draw family audiences.
“Godzilla: King of the Monsters” is expected to lead the pack with a projected opening of $53 million, according to Box Office Mojo. The film chalked up $6.3 million in box office receipts on Thursday, according to the studio that made it, Warner Bros., now owned by AT&T Inc. T, -4.13%
“Aladdin,” made by Walt Disney Co. DIS, -0.11% is expected to come in second place with an expected $45 million haul, according to Box Office Mojo. The film, which was directed by Guy Ritchie and stars Will Smith as the genie, grossed $86 million over last week’s Memorial Day holiday weekend to lead the North American box office.
The Elton John biopic “Rocketman,” made by Viacom Inc.’s VIAB, +1.03% Paramount, is expected to take third place at $35 million. That film’s appeal will likely be boosted by its strong Rotten Tomatoes score of 89%, but with an R rating due to explicit sex and drug-related activity likely to restrict its potential audience, according to MKM analyst Eric Handler.

The new release “Ma,” a horror film starring Octavia Spencer, is expected to come in third place with box office revenue of about $17 million, followed by Keanu Reeves-vehicle “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum,” which is expected to take fourth place with $13.5 million in receipts.
“Ma” was made by Blumhouse, the studio behind Jordan Peele’s Oscar-winning “Get Out” and Us.”
“Quarter-to-date box office revenue (through May 27) was up 1.4% and should strengthen a good amount with this weekend’s performance,” Handler wrote in a note to clients. “In our view, the quarter remains on track to reach our +3% forecast, but upcoming key releases need to perform at least in line with expectations.”
The latest iteration of the Godzilla franchise is the sequel to the 2014 revival, and will be released in 4,108 locations. The film has a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes out of 1,629 ratings.
