Despite mass layoffs in the tech industry, many Silicon Valley giants dominate a new list of the best places to work in America, even if a few big names dropped off.

Some 41 out of the top 100 large companies on career site Glassdoor’s list of “best places to work” were tech companies, up slightly from 40 in 2022. The next most represented industries were consulting and finance, which each had 7 companies on the list, followed by real estate, with 5 companies.

The names are drawn from the anonymous feedback of the employees who actually work at these companies. Workers fill out a review describing their job, the workplace environment and the company as an employer over the past year.

Software company Gainsight ranked first (scoring 4.7 out of 5) for the best company to work for, followed by cloud-storage company Box (4.6), consulting company Bain & Company (4.6), McKinsey & Company (4.6), graphic-cards company Nvidia (4.6) NVDA, +2.35%, mathematical computer-software company MathWorks (4.6), Boston Consulting Group (4.6) and Google parent Alphabet GOOGL, +1.09% (4.6).

The ranking was based on employees’ overall feedback during the past year. Workers volunteer feedback and rate their employers out of 5 on a variety of subjects, including how satisfied they are with their employer overall, their CEO, and other issues such as career opportunities, compensation and benefits, culture and values, diversity and inclusion, senior management and work-life balance. The average rating of companies on Glassdoor is 3.7.

A few major players fell off the list in 2023, including Facebook parent Meta META, +0.20%, which ranked 47th in 2022, Zillow Z, +0.51%, which ranked 54th in January 2022 when the U.S. housing market had not yet shown any major signs of slowing down, and Apple AAPL, +1.01%, which ranked 56th. A challenging economic environment may be one reason why these Silicon Valley giants fell off the list.

In the past year, Meta laid off 11,000 employees, including bus drivers and janitors, citing macroeconomic headwinds to manage costs. Zillow also announced 300 layoffs, representing about 5% of its workforce. Apple announced it will curtail hiring to manage costs, and laid off 100 contract recruiters in August, according to a Bloomberg report that cited sources close to the company. .

(Meta, Zillow and Apple were not immediately available to comment.)

“The past year brought extreme highs and lows for job seekers and employees, but despite an increasingly uncertain job market, Glassdoor data shows there are still companies hyper-focused on creating outstanding employee experiences,” Christian Sutherland-Wong, the company’s chief executive officer, said in a statement.

Large companies that made the lists past and present share traits such as having flexible working environments, good work-life balance, good health benefits, transparent senior leadership and access to executives.

The ranking was part of Glassdoor’s annual Employees’ Choice Awards, which is in its 15th year and includes half-a-dozen lists. Glassdoor also publishes “100 Best Places to Work” for large employers with 1,000 or more employees, “50 Best Small & Medium Companies to Work” for smaller employers as well as lists for Canada, the U.K., France and Germany.

“It’s encouraging to see companies doubling down on employee mental health and wellbeing, diversity and inclusion, competitive benefits and flexible work environments as we head into 2023,” Sutherland-Wong added.
