BRAD SMITH: “Dancing with the Stars” is moving on from ABC and heading to Disney+ after 15 years on cable. Kind of the same, same, but different. What impact could that have not only on the Disney+ platform, but the streaming wars at large? And we only have about 30 seconds.
ALEXANDRA CANAL: Yeah, you know, this is a pretty shocking story, but it does represent a big milestone in the streaming wars, as “Dancing with the Stars” will be the first live streaming reality series ever in the US. And something that we have to keep in mind is that NFL’s Monday Night Football will replace that 8:00 to 10:00 PM time slot. And that’s really why experts think this is a smart move.
I spoke with UVA Professor Anthony Palumba. He specializes in entertainment consumer behavior. He was telling me that the question you have to ask yourselves is, what do I need to watch right this very moment? And you can argue that “Dancing with the Stars,” you can probably wait a couple of days. “Dancing with the Stars” also has a really diverse audience, and that’s increasingly more important as we think about the streaming wars.
Now, at the end of the day, too, I think this is going to open up doors for other streamers to get more interactive with their consumers. I think we’re going to enter a space where the user experience is very tailored. And “Dancing with the Stars” could certainly be the catalyst for all of that. So exciting stuff in the space.
