The excitement of investing in a company that can reverse its fortunes is a big draw for some speculators, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can manage to find investors. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, so investors in these companies may be taking on more risk than they should.

Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL). While this doesn’t necessarily speak to whether it’s undervalued, the profitability of the business is enough to warrant some appreciation – especially if its growing.

How Fast Is Alphabet Growing?

The market is a voting machine in the short term, but a weighing machine in the long term, so you’d expect share price to follow earnings per share (EPS) outcomes eventually. So it makes sense that experienced investors pay close attention to company EPS when undertaking investment research. Shareholders will be happy to know that Alphabet’s EPS has grown 21% each year, compound, over three years. As a general rule, we’d say that if a company can keep up that sort of growth, shareholders will be beaming.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. The good news is that Alphabet is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 5.1 percentage points to 30%, over the last year. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in our book.

Are Alphabet Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$2.2t company like Alphabet. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. Notably, they have an enviable stake in the company, worth US$224b. Investors will appreciate management having this amount of skin in the game as it shows their commitment to the company’s future.

It’s good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? Well, based on the CEO pay, you’d argue that they are indeed. For companies with market capitalisations over US$8.0b, like Alphabet, the median CEO pay is around US$14m.

Alphabet’s CEO took home a total compensation package worth US$8.8m in the year leading up to December 2023. That is actually below the median for CEO’s of similarly sized companies. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. Generally, arguments can be made that reasonable pay levels attest to good decision-making.

Should You Add Alphabet To Your Watchlist?

You can’t deny that Alphabet has grown its earnings per share at a very impressive rate. That’s attractive. If you still have your doubts, remember too that company insiders have a considerable investment aligning themselves with the shareholders and CEO pay is quite modest compared to similarly sized companiess. The overarching message here is that Alphabet has underlying strengths that make it worth a look at.
