Americans are proud people… just not as proud as they used to be.

According to a new Gallup poll, only 45% of U.S. adults say they are “extremely” proud, marking the lowest level since the first reading back in 2001. Still, 70% overall echo the Lee Greenwood lyric and say they’re proud to be an American — not “extremely” proud, mind you, but proud, nevertheless.

Like most things in this country, there’s a massive political divide in the results.

As you can see, only 22% of Democrats are feeling extreme pride at the moment, which is half of what that reading was before Donald Trump took office.

Meanwhile, 76% of Republicans, who have historically taken much more pride in the country, tick the extreme box. Even when Barack Obama was president, Republicans still managed to come in at 68%.

“Absent a significant national event that might rally all Americans around the flag, given Democrats’ entrenched views of the president,” Gallup’s Megan Brenan wrote in a release, “these historically low readings on American pride are likely to continue until Trump is no longer in office.”

It’s doubtful that Trump’s tank parade in D.C. will amount to a “significant national event” that will stir up patriotic fervor on the left, but we’ll see.
