Barack Obama won’t be on the ballot in 2020 but he was a star of the Democratic debate on Thursday night.
So much so that Julian Castro, who’s polling in single digits, used the former president to attack Joe Biden on stage in Houston.
“I’m fulfilling the legacy of Barack Obama, and you’re not.”
In an exchange that drew gasps from the audience, Castro — who was Obama’s housing secretary — went after frontrunner Biden on his health-care plan and said he’d forgotten its details.
“Are you forgetting already what you said just two minutes ago?” Castro asked.
Health care was one of the hot-button issues in the latest debate, as it was in the first two. Biden wants to add a public option to the Affordable Care Act and sought early in the debate to contrast his plans with those by Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, who favor “Medicare for All.”
Castro, on his website, calls for expanding Medicare but allowing individuals to get supplementary private insurance.
