‘I am in shock over the tragic news of Kobe’s and Gianna’s passing. Words can’t describe the pain I’m feeling. I loved Kobe — he was like a little brother to me.’

That’s Michael Jordan sharing his thoughts on the passing of Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gianna, both of whom died in a helicopter crash on Sunday morning.

“He was a fierce competitor, one of the greats of the game and a creative force,” Jordan continued. “Kobe was also an amazing dad who loved his family deeply — and took great pride in his daughter’s love for the game of basketball. Yvette joins me in sending my deepest condolences to Vanessa, the Lakers organization and basketball fans around the world.”

Those words clearly would have meant a lot to Bryant, considering the imprint Jordan had on his life, and, as you can see from this video, his game:

Bryant, an 18-time NBA All-Star and five-time champion, surpassed Jordan as third on the NBA’s all-time scoring list back in 2014, but he just gave up that spot to LeBron James on Saturday night.

“I’m happy just to be in any conversation with Kobe Bean Bryant, one of the all-time greatest basketball players to ever play, one of the all-time greatest Lakers,” James said following the game. “The man has two jerseys hanging up in Staples Center. It’s just crazy.”
