President Donald Trump, who once dismissed global warming as a “Chinese hoax,” was clearly prepared to address the topic on Wednesday with “Good Morning Britain” host and superfan Piers Morgan.
‘I believe that there’s a change in weather, and I think it changes both ways. Don’t forget it used to be called global warming. That wasn’t working. Then it was called climate change. Now it’s actually called extreme weather, because with extreme weather, you can’t miss.’
The interview took place after Trump sat down with Prince Charles for 90 minutes and devoted a big chunk of that time to the issue.
“He is really into climate change and I think that’s great. What he really wants and what he really feels warmly about is the future,” the president told Morgan. “He wants to make sure future generations have climate that is good climate, as opposed to a disaster, and I agree.”
But when pressed to acknowledge what the vast majority of scientists believe, Trump danced around the idea that warming temps are an imminent threat.
He referenced “the worst tornado binge we’ve ever had” some 40 years ago, and “the worst hurricanes” the planet has ever seen back in 1890. In other words, yes, the climate “changes both ways,” and it will continue to do so.
Trump, who pulled out of the international Paris climate accord, blamed China, India and Russia for polluting the environment and said the United States boasts “among the cleanest climates.”
Heading in to Trump’s visit, climate change was clearly a hot-button issue. Teenager Ollie Nancarrow, as you can see, was the voice of many when he mowed this message into a field on the president’s flight path into the U.K.:
In the wide-ranging chat with Morgan, Trump also explained why he called Meghan Markle “nasty” — “I wasn’t referring to she’s nasty. I said she was nasty about me” — and he addressed the “bone spurs” issue — “I was never a fan of that war” but “I would not have minded” serving in the military.
