Comparing President Donald Trump to a nuclear reactor in mid-meltdown, former White House aide Anthony Scaramucci said Sunday that Republicans may have to find another candidate in 2020.

“Right now, it’s an unspeakable thing. But if he keeps it up, it will no longer be unspeakable. The minute they start speaking of it, it will circulate and be socialized. We can’t afford a full nuclear contamination site post 2020.”

Anthony Scaramucci

In an interview with Axios published Sunday, Scaramucci — the founder of SkyBridge Capital and the White House communications chief for 11 days in 2017 — said Trump’s behavior could force a Republican to challenge him in the primary, and that challenger could have a lot of support.

“We are now in the early episodes of ‘Chernobyl’ on HBO, where the reactor is melting down and the apparatchiks are trying to figure out whether to cover it up or start the clean-up process,” Scaramucci told Axios. “A couple more weeks like this and ‘country over party’ is going to require the Republicans to replace the top of the ticket in 2020.”

Of course, it was just a little over a month ago that Scaramucci was predicting a landslide win for Trump in 2020.

But he has harshly criticized the president in recent weeks, saying Trump’s behavior — from telling congresswomen of color to go back to where they came from, to tweeting about meeting the victims of the El Paso massacre — divides the country.

“I do try to defend [Trump], but there are certain things he’s done that are absolutely indefensible,” Scaramucci said Friday on HBO’s “Real Talk with Bill Maher.”

That led to a weekend Twitter battle between “the Mooch” and Trump.

“Anthony Scaramucci, who was quickly terminated (11 days) from a position that he was totally incapable of handling, now seems to do nothing but television as the all time expert on ‘President Trump,’” Trump tweeted Saturday.

“For the last 3 years I have fully supported this President. Recently he has said things that divide the country in a way that is unacceptable. So I didn’t pass the 100% litmus test,” Scaramucci tweeted Sunday. “Eventually he turns on everyone and soon it will be you and then the entire country.”

He later tweeted a New Yorker cartoon of the “Five Stages of White House Employment.”

When asked to comment Sunday on Scaramucci’s remarks, White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham told Axios: “It sounds like his feelings are hurt.”
