As Americans mourned yet another mass shooting this weekend, Major League Soccer’s Alejandro Bedoya had a blunt message for Congress: Do something!
“Hey Congress, do something now! End gun violence! Let’s go!”
Those are the words the Philadelphia Union midfielder spoke into an on-field TV microphone Sunday after scoring a goal against DC United in Washington.
The comment came a day after two mass shootings, in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, left at least 29 dead and scores more wounded.
Not one to “stick to sports,” Bedoya, who has played 66 games for the U.S. national team, had called for action before the game, in a pair of tweets.
“Words without actions are just worthless,” he said. “Do something!!! Enough!!! . . . We can start with stricter background checks, red flag laws, making a registry for gun purchases, closing gun show loopholes, and taxing ammunition.”
Bedoya is from Weston, Fla., not far from Parkland, the site of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018.
Moments of silence were held for the victims of Saturday’s shootings at a number of sporting events Sunday, including baseball games by the Houston Astros and Cleveland Indians, NASCAR’s race in Watkins Glen, N.Y., and the World Cup champion U.S. women’s soccer team, before a match with Ireland at Pasadena’s Rose Bowl.
