President Donald Trump and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo are getting after it — and into it.
The president and the governor have been using television and social media to engage in a war of words over who has the “ultimate authority” to reopen the economy in the states. “Cuomo’s been calling daily, even hourly, begging for everything, most of which should have been the state’s responsibility, such as new hospitals, beds, ventilators, etc.,” Trump tweeted TWTR, +3.19% Tuesday. “I got it all done for him, and everyone else, and now he seems to want Independence! That won’t happen!”
Also Tuesday, Trump compared the governor’s stance to “Mutiny on the Bounty” and said that he had “ultimate authority” on when to open the economy. Trump has warned that efforts to stem the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, or SARS-CoV-2, will send the economy into a Great Recession; the Dow Jones Industrial Index DJIA, +2.29% has been on a wild ride in recent weeks. Trump said he’ll decide when to reopen the economy. “When somebody is president of the United States, the authority is total,” he said Monday.
“This is too important for anyone to play politics,” Cuomo responded at his daily press briefing on Tuesday. “Sometimes, it takes more strength to walk away from a fight than engage it. I’ve stood here for 44 years. It’s not about me, it’s about ‘we.’ This is not time for politics, and it’s no time to fight. I put my hand out in total partnership with the president. If he wants a fight, he’s not going to get it from me. Period. This is a time to work together. In this reopening we could lose all the progress we made in one week, if we do it wrong.”
Cuomo also reiterated that it was up to the states to decide when to reopen business. “His proclamation is that he would be king.” He added, “He’s right, I did call and say I need federal assistance …I praised him for his actions. The federal government plays a very important role.” On Monday, Cuomo told MSNBC CMCSA, +1.36%, “The Constitution says we don’t have a king …We didn’t have King George Washington, we had President George Washington.” He added, “It’s a total abrogation of the Constitution. [The] 10th Amendment specifically says power to the states.”
Meanwhile, coronavirus numbers keep climbing, with New York City now the epicenter of the pandemic. Some 10,834 of the 23,608 U.S. fatalities were in New York State as of Tuesday morning, up 778 in 24 hours. There were another 1,600 hospitalizations in New York over the last 24 hours. More than 195,000 of the 582,594 confirmed cases in the U.S. were in New York State. “We think we are at the apex,” Cuomo said. The number of confirmed cases worldwide is 1,945,055, with 121,897 deaths recorded from the virus, and 465,752 people having recovered from the disease.
Economists and health professionals advise caution. Neel Kashkari, head of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, told CBS VIAC, -1.37% VIACA, -2.05% on Sunday that the U.S. is looking at an 18-month road of rolling shutdowns. “This could be a long, hard road that we have ahead of us until we get to either an effective therapy or a vaccine. It’s hard for me to see a V-shaped recovery under that scenario,” he said. “We could have these waves of flare-ups, controls, flare-ups and controls, until we actually get a therapy or a vaccine.”
