‘Don’t meddle in the election.’
That’s what President Donald Trump said to Russian President Vladimir Putin on the coming 2020 presidential election, when prompted by the news media.
The remark by the U.S. president, said during a meeting on the sidelines of the Group of 20 meeting in Osaka, Japan, belied in part what has been perceived as a chummy demeanor with the Moscow leader. Trump smiled as he made the comment and described the relationship between Moscow and Washington as “very, very good.”
“It’s a great honor to be with President Putin,” Trump said.
An investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller and others say the Russian government meddled in U.S. politics, resulting in the 2018 indictments of 25 Russians. Trump has repeatedly dismissed accusations of collusion between his 2016 presidential campaign team and Russia agents.
Trump’s comments to Putin were a response to a reporter question and come as the U.S. leader is attempting to forge trade and nuclear-disarmament deals between the world’s largest economies and other nations. Investors are closely watching for a meeting between Trump and Xi Jinping, with the Dow Jones Industrial DJIA, -0.04% the S&P 500 index SPX, +0.38% and the Nasdaq Composite Index COMP, +0.73% poised for the best June in decades on hopes for trade resolution with international counterparts, including China.
