Earnings Spotlight: Home Depot

<p class="canvas-atom canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)–sm Mt(0.8em)–sm" type="text" content="Home Depot (HD, $280.55) will try to keep up the momentum for housing market stocks this week as it reports its latest quarterly results after the Aug. 18 closing bell.” data-reactid=”42″>Home Depot (HD, $280.55) will try to keep up the momentum for housing market stocks this week as it reports its latest quarterly results after the Aug. 18 closing bell.

Broadly speaking, Wall Street expects another strong quarter. Consensus estimates are for $34.18 billion in revenues (+10.8% year-over-year) and profits of $3.63 per share (+14.2%). They’re also widely bullish on the stock, at 16 Buy ratings over the past three months versus eight Holds and no Sells.

Wells Fargo analyst Zachary Fadem (Overweight, equivalent of Buy) recently raised his 12-month price target from $295 per share to $300, saying about home-improvement stores in general: “We believe strong foot traffic reflects consumers’ immediate need/desire for products/services, need for assistance and demand for items that cannot be shipped easily (Paint, Live Goods, Lumber, etc.).”

UBS analyst Michael Lasser says he expects double-digit comparable-store sales (revenues from stores open 12 months or more) for both HD and rival Lowe’s (LOW), saying “A combo of wallet share shifts, supportive weather, & stimulus likely drove demand in Q2.”

Morgan Stanley analyst Simeon Gutman (Overweight) also raised his PT, from $260 per share to $285, and also believes HD will post strong comps. He’s looking for comparable-store sales growth in the high teens, as well as at least $4 per share in profits.

WEDNESDAY

Earnings Spotlight: Target

<p class="canvas-atom canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)–sm Mt(0.8em)–sm" type="text" content="Target (TGT, $136.53) continues a big earnings week for the retail industry with results due out ahead of the Aug. 19 open. And while the analyst community is expecting a mixed report out of Target, the sentiment is positive and indicates TGT is on the upswing.” data-reactid=”55″>Target (TGT, $136.53) continues a big earnings week for the retail industry with results due out ahead of the Aug. 19 open. And while the analyst community is expecting a mixed report out of Target, the sentiment is positive and indicates TGT is on the upswing.

“Almost more than any other retailer, we believe TGT has done an admirable job of harnessing positive vibes from its customers, vendors, & other stakeholders in the last few months. Between this goodwill & other factors, it has a lot working in its favor, in our view,” writes UBS’s Lasser, who has a Neutral rating on shares but recently upgraded his 12-month price target from $125 per share to $135.

Lasser sees TGT reporting a 125% year-over-year explosion in online sales, and while it might be difficult to maintain that trajectory, he still believes “TGT will see strong sales in (the second half of 2020).”

Raymond James’ Matthew McClintock (Strong Buy) raised his price target on TGT shares from $150 to $160. He believes the company benefited from a recovery in consumer spending, and that Target will exceed revenue expectations thanks in part to its omni-channel presence.

On the whole, analysts are looking for an 8.2% improvement in sales to $19.94 billion, but a 15.2% decline in profits to $1.58 per share.

Earnings Spotlight: Nvidia

<p class="canvas-atom canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)–sm Mt(0.8em)–sm" type="text" content="Nvidia (NVDA, $462.56) will try to justify 2020’s near-doubling in its shares when it reports its second-quarter earnings after the Aug. 19 closing bell.” data-reactid=”63″>Nvidia (NVDA, $462.56) will try to justify 2020’s near-doubling in its shares when it reports its second-quarter earnings after the Aug. 19 closing bell.

But it might take a whopper of a report to keep Nvidia’s stock climbing. While Wall Street is overwhelmingly bullish on the name (at 26 Buys vs. just three Holds and one Sell over the past quarter), NVDA shares are well past the pros’ consensus price target of $421.81 per share.

<p class="canvas-atom canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)–sm Mt(0.8em)–sm" type="text" content="Wedbush's Matt Bryson still thinks Nvidia has more room to roam, as he recently reiterated his Outperform rating and juiced his 12-month price target from $420 per share to $500. In his recent earnings preview, he said he expects "solid results and a strong guide" amid still-robust artificial intelligence (AI) demand and accelerated gaming demand.” data-reactid=”65″>Wedbush’s Matt Bryson still thinks Nvidia has more room to roam, as he recently reiterated his Outperform rating and juiced his 12-month price target from $420 per share to $500. In his recent earnings preview, he said he expects “solid results and a strong guide” amid still-robust artificial intelligence (AI) demand and accelerated gaming demand.

“Ancillary data points (e.g., Samsung’s commentary on GDDR demand) and our checks suggest PC gaming demand picked up substantially in CQ2,” Bryson writes. “We view NVDA as the primary beneficiary of this trend with new GPUs in FQ3 likely to further stimulate demand.”

Deutsche Bank analyst Ross Seymore’s opinion (Hold, $405) is much closer to the broader Street’s thoughts – namely that NVDA will do well, but that its stock will be hard-pressed to appreciate from here:

“Overall, while we expect the co’s positive fundamental momentum to continue into next week’s results/guidance, especially given new product ramps in both Gaming and Datacenter, we believe much of this goodness is already reflected in NVDA’s share price.”
