Ukrainian city grieves after Russian missile strike

STORY: This is the moment Russian missiles fell on a Ukrainian city far from the frontline, captured on CCTV.The city of Vinnytsia, 125 miles (200km) southwest of Kyiv, is home to around 370,000 people. On Friday, residents grieved for their dead and cleaned the streets a day after at least 23 people were killed and scores more wounded in the attack.Ukraine said Thursday’s strike on an officers’ club had been carried out with Kalibr cruise missiles launched from a Russian submarine in the Black Sea.Ukraine’s state emergency services said 71 people were hospitalized and 29 people remain missing. While three children, including a 4-year-old girl named as Liza, were among the dead.Liza’s mother remains in hospital, unaware of her daughter’s fate for fear of the impact it might have on her recovery said Chief Doctor at Vinnytsia Emergency Hospital, Oleksandr Fomin.”If we tell her now that her daughter has died, there will be no chance of her being released from hospital. If her blood pressure goes up even by 10 units, she will suffer from blood clots, stroke or heart attack. The body of the mother has gone through a meat grinder.”Residents placed teddy bears and flowers at a makeshift memorial near the site of the strike.Rescuers and locals helped with the cleanup effort, shocked at what has taken place in their town. Business owner Ivan Kotyhoroh counts himself lucky no one was inside his premises at the time.”A colleague ran outside, onto the street or to the shelter, I don’t know. You can see the result of what happened here. A colleague sustained injures, he was found on the street. He has burns and is now being treated in the hospital.”Ukraine said the bombed officers’ club housed commercial offices and a cultural center with a public concert hall, where musicians were rehearsing for a pop concert planned for Thursday night. A nearby medical center was also destroyed. The attack was the latest in a series of Russian strikes in recent weeks using long-range missiles on crowded buildings in cities far from the front, each killing dozens of people.President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called Russia a terrorist state and urged more sanctions against the Kremlin .Russia’s defense ministry said the building was being used for a meeting between military officials and foreign arms suppliers. It has repeatedly denied targeting civilian areas.
