‘A lame duck PM’: UK opposition call for election
STORY: Addressing her first news conference as prime minister, Truss admitted she had gone “further and faster” than markets expected and sacked her friend and finance minister Kwasi Kwarteng to try to appease her lawmakers. Speaking from Scotland, leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP) Nicola Sturgeon described Truss as being ”out of her depth” and “a lame duck prime minister.””The sooner she goes and the sooner people get the chance to get rid of this Tory government that is doing so much damage once and for all, the better,” Sturgeon said. Leader of the Liberal Democrats Ed Davey and the SNP’s leader in the House of Commons Ian Blackford also called for a general election.Labour’s finance policy chief Rachel Reeves said: ”The Tories are out of ideas, they are out of time. It is time for a Labour government.” Britain’s next election is expected to take place in 2024.
