Netflix Kills a Service So Popular It Lasted 25 Years

After 25 years of operation, Netflix announced Tuesday that 2023 will see the end of the DVD rental service that first put the media giant on the map. The streaming service will stop shipping discs on Sept. 29; they will continue to accept DVD returns until the end of October. Netflix reports mixed earnings as password crackdown set to expand

Netflix Inc beat Wall Street earnings estimates for the first quarter but offered a lighter-than-expected forecast on Tuesday, demonstrating the challenges that the mature streaming service faces in its pursuit of growth. Netflix said it shifted a wider launch of a plan to crack down on unsanctioned password sharing into the second quarter to make improvements, delaying some financial benefits, but said it was pleased with results so far. As the streaming video pioneer faces signs of market saturation, it is looking to new ways to make money, such as the password crackdown and a new ad-supported service.
