– Despite controversy over its show “Monster” highlighting serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, Netflix renewing the series. Here to tell us more, Yahoo Finance’s Alexandra Canal. And [? Ali, ?] we talked time and time again, it was a massive hit. I haven’t seen it, but I don’t think a big surprise that they’re going season two.
ALEXANDRA CANAL: I’m not surprised. Both “Monster” as well as the “Watcher” both getting that renewal at Netflix. And ultimately, this is because the viewers wanted it. They showed up for it, had really solid reviews, really strong word of mouth. “Monster” consistently was on the top of the Nielsen streaming charts. And according to Netflix, it quickly became its second most popular English language TV season ever.
Seasons two and seasons three have been renewed. And this is going to operate like an anthology series, which we know creator Ryan Murphy, he’s all about that. So think what we’ve seen before from him with “American Horror Story,” so maybe potentially other serial killers. I’m not quite sure the direction they’re going to take.
Netflix said that the other seasons would focus on, quote, “monstrous figures” who have impacted society. So that’s pretty broad. Take with it what you will.
But Ryan Murphy, he’s also behind the “Watcher”. He signed a massive five-year deal with Netflix in 2018, $300 million. He’s in that third year, so a little over halfway through. And finally, we’re starting to see this deal pay off for the company.
So we’ll have to see what else Ryan Murphy can come up with. But for now, I’m certainly not surprised that these two shows were renewed. I haven’t seen either one yet. The “Watcher” I think I will watch.
– I watched.
ALEXANDRA CANAL: “Dahmer,” I think I’m out.
– I watched one episode of the “Watcher”. It’s intriguing. It wasn’t enough to get me hooked.
ALEXANDRA CANAL: OK.
– I heard if you give it a little bit more, give it a chance.
ALEXANDRA CANAL: It’s loosely based on a true story in New Jersey.
– It is. It is.
ALEXANDRA CANAL: So there you go. Based on real events.
