Sen. Johnny Isakson, a Republican from Georgia, announced Wednesday that he was resigning a t the end of the year.
In a statement, Isakson cited health concerns.
“My Parkinson’s has been progressing and I am continuing physical therapy to recover from a fall in July,” he said.
The resignation was first reported by Politico.
Isakson is chair of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs and the Senate Select Committee on Ethics. He was first elected to the Senate in 2004 after serving six years in the House of Representatives. He last won reelection in 2016.
Prior to serving in Congress, Isakson built a career in the real estate industry.
Prior to Isakson’s announcement, there were 34 Senate seats up for election in 2020. Republicans will be defending 22 seats while Democrats will be defending 12 seats. Democrats will need to gain 3 or 4 seats to take control.
