Even some of the staunchest Trump supporters have backed away from the idea that the coronavirus pandemic is a “media hoax” aimed at destroying the president’s chances for re-election.

The vloggers, who are frequent Fox News guests and have their own show on the streaming channel Fox Nation, suggested Monday that the surge in reported deaths from the coronavirus outbreak is merely a media tactic “to make it look bad in front of our eyes.”

Diamond and Silk, who have visited Trump at the White House, have also popped up regularly on the president’s Twitter TWTR, -2.05% feed over the past few years.

Soon after Monday’s clip was posted, “Diamond & Silk” shot up Twitter’s trending charts — and mostly not in a positive manner for them, as you can see from some of the more popular reactions:

Diamond and Silk, with 1.4 million Twitter followers, responded to the backlash:

Fox Business earlier this month “parted ways” with host Trish Regan after she stirred up controversy with a similar take by blaming Democrats and the “liberal media” for using the coronavirus pandemic as a tool to “destroy the president.”

In general, there seems to have been a shift in tone among top Fox News personalities like Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham, as the Washington Post sought to illustrate with this popular video:

According to the latest tally from Johns Hopkins University, the number of diagnosed cases of COVID-19 rose above 800,000 on Tuesday. At least 38,714 people have died. The U.S now has the highest number of cases worldwide, at 164,610, with at least 3,170 deaths.
