“Game of Thrones” just scored the most Emmy nominations in history — for its most divisive season ever.
The HBO drama drawn from author George R. R. Martin’s bloody saga of noble families warring over who gets to rule the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros ended after eight seasons in May with six episodes widely panned as the worst in the show’s otherwise critically acclaimed reign on television and in pop culture for most of the last decade. And even though a Change.org petition to remake Season 8 with new “competent writers” has collected almost 2 million signatures, the show still received a record-setting 32 Emmy nominations Tuesday morning, which eclipses the all-time series record of 27 earned by “NYPD Blue” in 1994.

The “GoT” nods included all of the major acting categories for drama, with seven of the 12 outstanding supporting actor/actress slots going to “Thrones” cast members. It also scored nominations for outstanding drama series, and co-creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss were nominated for writing and directing.
“Thrones” viewers had a lot to say about that on social media. And the line between those glad to see their favorite show go out with accolades, and those still bitter about the way it ended, was pretty … stark.
“Uhh … did the definition of outstanding change while I was away,” tweeted one user at the official “Game of Thrones” account. Another added, “If it wins, the Emmys are more of a joke than the writing in Season 8 was.” Several wrote, “I hope you lose.”
And then there were the memes.
Other fans celebrated the actors and the special-effects teams, in particular, for being recognized.
And one or two even congratulated the writers.
The Primetime Emmy Awards are set to air live on Sept. 22 on Fox.
