The Margin: Ocasio-Cortez deletes tweet cheering oil’s historic plunge, but not before she gets blasted on Twitter by the right

Oil closed in negative territory Monday for the first time ever, reeling from a “mix of two black swans,” as one oil analyst put it, that thrust the global economy even deeper into chaos.

The shocking plunge was apparently music to the ears of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of “Green New Deal” fame, if this since-deleted tweet from the New York Democrat is any indication:

She toned down her language in follow-up tweets:

But, as far as her critics were concerned, the damage was done.

“People’s jobs are evaporating,” North Dakota Rep. Kelly Armstrong wrote. “Lives are being ruined in real-time. North Dakota companies that have taken decades to build have been destroyed in hours. Any public official that loves to see this does not deserve to hold office.”

Louisiana Republican Steve Scalise, his party’s House whip, also chimed in:

Texas Republican Jodey Arrington joined the mounting backlash.

“I don’t ‘love to see’ oil & gas workers & their rural communities suffering as a result of this devastating price collapse,” he tweeted. “Places like West Texas & hard-working men & women in the oil patch power the bright lights of NYC… including the hospitals!”

Ocasio-Cortez perhaps saw the oil drop as an opportunity to push her proposed framework — which Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell sought last year to treat as formally proposed legislation and compel lawmakers to go on record as for or against it — to tackle climate change and shift the economy’s focus toward eco-friendly policies and away from reliance on fossil fuels.

But, for her detractors, she obviously had picked the wrong time to make such a statement.

Still, not everybody was giving “AOC,” as she’s known, a hard time over the tweet:
