Serena Williams lost to Canada’s Bianca Andreescu 6-3, 7-5 in the U.S. Open tennis championship Saturday evening, with the American legend failing for a second year in a row to claim a history-matching 24th Grand Slam title in New York to equal Margaret Court’s career tally.

The 19-year-old Canadian phenom, Andreescu becomes the first Canadian, man or woman, to win a major in a singles event and has done so in the fewest number of Grand Slam appearances since Maria Sharapova won Wimbledon in 2004, according to ESPN.

Williams was broken early by Andreescu, who won a coin toss to serve to kick off the highly anticipated matchup but deferred to the 37-year-old icon, who got off to a shaky start and played unsteady tennis throughout the match.

Last year, Williams lost a controversial match to Japanese star Naomi Osaka 6-3, 6-4.

Williams missed four straight major tournaments because of her pregnancy, and has struggled since returning to the sport after the birth of her child, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., in September of 2017.

The match took place in front of star-studded arena at the 23,000-seat Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York City, which featured Williams’s close friend, Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, and movie director Spike Lee.
