Leave it to “The Simpsons,” through the power of musical parody, to bring the country together in a rare moment of bipartisan agreement.
Yes,critics from both sides agree, the show’s latest presidential hit job is a dud. In fact, as Bart Simpson might say, they’re having a cow, man.
Esquire said it “might be worse than Trump himself,” The A.V. Club called it “ham-fisted” and Twitter’s TWTR, -2.80% reaction was basically this:
The clip is set to the tune of “America” from West Side Story, and it features a cartoon version of “The Squad,” the nickname of the four freshmen congresswomen — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ayanna Pressley, Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib — who have been tangling with the president lately.
“They shouldn’t be in America. No one but me in America,” Trump sings in the opening. “No taxes for me in America. This is my natural hair-ica.”
In real life, Trump last month said the women should “go back” to where they came from and ramped up the feud this month when he said Tlaib and Omar, both Muslim, should be banned from visiting Israel over their past criticism of the nation.
As for the cartoon clip, it ends with Joe Biden standing over a collapsed Trump, saying “Who’s an old man now?”
Watch the whole thing:
Cue the virtual boos:
“The Simpsons” has been poking fun at Trump for decades now. Most notably, in an episode back in 2000, the show predicted Trump would become president. Fast forward to 2016 and the show responded to his election: “Being right sucks.”
The 31st season of “The Simpsons” kicks off next month.
