Robert Mueller told lawmakers on Wednesday that Russian interference in U.S. political campaigns continues unabated to this day — and will likely continue through the 2020 election.

Rep. Will Hurd, a Repubican from Texas, had asked: “Did you think that this was a single attempt by the Russians to get involved in our election or did you find evidence to suggest they’ll try to do this again?” during a hearing of the House Intelligence Committee.

“It wasn’t a single attempt. They’re doing it as we sit here and they expect to do it during the next campaign,” he said.

Democratic Rep. Jim Himes of Connecticut focused on the June 2016 meeting between Kremlin-connected Russians and Donald Trump Jr. that took place after the Russians offered dirt on Hillary Clinton.

“If a campaign receives an offer of dirt from a foreign individual or a government, generally speaking, should that campaign report those contacts?” Himes asked, noting that the Trump team did not notify the FBI about the offer.

“Should be, and it can be, depending on the circumstances, a crime,” Mueller said.

The former special counsel was being questioned at length by Democrats on the committee about Russian election meddling and possible ties to the Trump campaign.

Republicans, meanwhile, continued to focus on the origins of the probe, and sought to distance the president from Russia’s meddling.
