“Game of Thrones” may have attracted a record number of viewers to its finale in April, but it’s HBO’s latest hit that’s getting all the critical love.
The Independent calls “Chernobyl” a “triumph of disaster.” Forbes describes it as “an absolutely stunning achievement of filmmaking.” RogerEbert.com cheers it is “brilliantly structured” and “remarkable.” The New York Times says it’s a tale of “gripping detail and historical and scientific import.”
It’s not just the pros that are eating up the five-episode series.
In fact, no other show in TV history has scored such lofty marks as “Chernobyl,” according to the latest IMDb tally. The miniseries, which concludes on Monday night, has earned a crowdsourced 9.7 out of 10 rating, beating the 9.4 marks set by “Game of Thrones” and “Breaking Bad.”
For some added perspective, “The Shawshank Redemption” is the highest scoring movie at 9.3, followed by “The Godfather” at 9.2.
Of the hundreds of user reviews for “Chernobyl,” Natasha Pekar, who claims to be from Kiev, earned the top spot on IMDb with her praise.
“The telephones, the clothes, the haircuts, the cracked paint on the window sills, even the door glass is similar to what I remember,” she wrote. “I highly recommend to watch this film. This is a tribute to all the heroes who lost their lives in a radioactive flame and saved all of us from death.”
