It’s time for “Frozen” to let its box office crown go.
Disney’s DIS, -2.01% remake of “The Lion King” has officially swiped the title of highest-grossing animated movie worldwide of all time (not adjusting for inflation), clawing $1.334 billion as of Aug. 11, BoxOfficeMojo reported.
“Frozen” captured imaginations and ticket sales across the globe in 2013 when it earned $1.287 billion, but the reimagining of the 1994 cartoon classic about the power struggles in a pride of lions (which still falls under the animation category as a “photorealistic computer-animated remake,” CinemaBlend explained) has been a box office hit since opening last month, despite mixed reviews.

The new “Lion King” is commonly grouped among Disney’s “live-action” reimaginings of its animated hits, such as this year’s “Dumbo” (a dud at $352 million worldwide) and “Aladdin” ($1.034 billion worldwide). And CGI lion cub Simba and his pals also reign above these live-action adaptations after beating 2017’s “Beauty and the Beast,” which earned $1.263 billion globally, making it the most successful Disney remake ever.
The other animated box office winners include a slew of sequels from Disney’s Pixar Animation Studios, as well as films from the “Despicable Me” franchise by Universal’s CMCSA, -1.09% Illumination Entertainment. Check out the top five highest grossing animated movies worldwide below.
