President Donald Trump on Tuesday said letting Dr. Anthony Fauci testify in the House of Representatives would be a “set up” by Democrats who want his administration to fail in its response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Departing the White House for Phoenix, Trump was asked why he wouldn’t allow Fauci, the country’s top infectious disease expert, to testify in the Democratic-led House.
“The House is a set up. The House is a bunch of Trump haters,” he said. “They frankly want our situation to be unsuccessful, which means death,” he added. The president claimed Democrats want him to fail, “so they can win an election.”
The Associated Press reported that a White House memo to congressional committees says no member of the administration’s coronavirus task force can agree to testify on Capitol Hill unless the invitation is expressly approved by the president’s chief of staff. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, said Trump was “muzzling science and the truth.”
