President Donald Trump says he wants the ‘most brilliant’ people to live in the U.S.

President Donald Trump on Thursday unveiled a new immigration proposal based on workers’ skills, as he said he hopes the U.S. does not go to war with Iran.

IMMIGRATION PLAN

In a Rose Garden speech, Trump said he wanted to have the “most brilliant” people live in the U.S. and that if congressional Democrats wouldn’t go along with his proposal he would get it passed after the 2020 election.

Under the plan, according to the Associated Press, the U.S. would award the same number of green cards as it does now. But more would go to high-achieving students, professionals and people with high-level and vocational degrees. Far fewer green cards would be given to people with relatives already in the country, the AP said.

Democrats have sought protection for immigrants known as Dreamers, but Trump’s proposal doesn’t include protection for them.

IRAN WAR

Trump was asked about the prospect of armed conflict with Iran before he met Swiss President Ueli Maurer.

“I hope not,” the president replied.

Earlier this week he denied a report that said his administration was planning to send 120,000 troops to the Middle East — but said he’d “absolutely” send them if necessary. A report in the Washington Post said Trump is frustrated with some of his top advisers, who he thinks could rush the U.S. into a military confrontation with Iran.

Oil futures climbed Thursday as investors focused on still-percolating Middle East tensions.
