U.S. gov’t ‘needs our help’ on AI: Former Google CEO

(SOUNDBITE) (English) ERIC SCHMIDT, NATIONAL SECURITY COMMISSION ON ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND FORMER CHAIRMAN AND CEO OF GOOGLE, SAYING: "I think what we've concluded is that the U.S. government sort of needs our help." That's Google's former CEO Eric Schmidt, who now leads the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence. On Tuesday in Washington, he presented some of the panel's key findings from its interim report. Those include the need for the United States to invest in AI reserach, apply the technology to national security missions, and train an AI-ready workfroce, with Schmidt calling America's AI talent shortage "severe. " Schmidt says these steps are esstential to combat the rising technological threat from China and Russia and their use of AI surveillance. There's no question this is going on." U.S. Energy Secretary Rick Perry took it a step further, likening the the technology race to the nuclear arms race. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. ENERGY SECRTARY RICK PERRY SAYING: "We are engaged in an epic race for AI supremacy... as I speak, China and Russia are striving to overtake us, neither of these nations shares our values, or our freedoms... Both are using their power to undermine the sovereignty and security of other nations." Schmidt also underscored the need for an allied effort on AI in the realm of national security.
