The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 28,538.44 on Tuesday with a gain of 76.30 points or 0.27%. The S&P 500 closed at 3,230.78 for a gain of 9.49 points or 0.29%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 8,972.60 for a gain of 26.61 points or 0.30%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 13.88 for a loss of 0.94 points or -6.34%.

For the year, the Nasdaq gained 35.2%, the S&P 500 gained 28.9% and the Dow Jones gained 22.3%.

U.S. indexes closed with gains Tuesday. The Nasdaq reported its best year since 2013 and the Dow Jones reported its largest gain since 2017.

An announcement from President Trump on the upcoming signing of the phase one trade deal between the U.S. and China on Jan. 15, 2020 and the beginning of phase two talks helped the day’s gains, capping off an end-of-the-year rally.

The Treasury yield curve ended the year with a 10-2 year spread of 343 basis points. The 10-year note reported a yield of 1.920% and the 30-year bond reported a yield of 2.391%.

Over the holiday and later in the week, investors will be digesting an end-of-year address from Chinese President Xi Jinping and watching the Fed’s December meeting minutes on Jan. 3.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Index increased 0.1% in October following an increase of 0.1%. Year over year, the S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Index increased 2.2%.
  • The FHFA House Price Index increased 0.2% in October following an increase of 0.7%.
  • The Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index decreased to 126.5 from 126.8.

The technology sector led gains in the S&P 500, gaining 49.38% for the year. In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, stocks leading the index for the year included:

  • Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) 86.74%
  • Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) 57.01%
  • JPMorgan (JPM ) 45.39%
  • United Technologies (NYSE:UTX) 43.52%
  • Visa (NYSE:V) 43.16%

In the S&P 100, the following stocks ended the year with the top market caps (in $ millions):

  • Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) 1,304,453.74
  • Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) 1,203,062.65
  • Alphabet Inc Class C (NASDAQ:GOOG) 923,362.44
  • Alphabet Inc A (NASDAQ:GOOGL) 922,534.29
  • Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) 916,153.94
  • Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) 585,320.98
  • JPMorgan (NYSE:JPM) 437,226.00

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,668.47 for a gain of 4.32 points or 0.26%. The S&P 600 closed at 1,021.18 for a gain of 3.16 points or 0.31%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Growth Index closed at 10,672.72 for a gain of 30.28 points or 0.28%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Value Index closed at 9,953.79 for a gain of 25.21 points or 0.25%.

Other notable index closes on Tuesday included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 2,063.02 for a gain of 2.30 points or 0.11%; the S&P 100 at 1,442.17 for a gain of 4.03 points or 0.28%; the Nasdaq 100 at 8,733.07 for a gain of 23.35 points or 0.27%; the Russell 3000 at 1,892.25 for a gain of 5.59 points or 0.30%; the Russell 1000 at 1,784.21 for a gain of 5.31 points or 0.30%; the Wilshire 5000 at 33,001.75 for a gain of 93.39 points or 0.28%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 755.52 for a gain of 0.94 points or 0.12%.
