US Indexes Close Mostly Flat on Tuesday

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 27,934.02 on Tuesday with a loss of 102.20 points or -0.36%. The S&P 500 closed at 3,120.18 for a loss of 1.85 points or -0.06%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 8,570.66 for a gain of 20.72 points or 0.24%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 12.84 for a gain of 0.38 points or 3.05%.

U.S. indexes closed mostly flat Tuesday as investors await results from retail companies, bringing an end to the major reports from the third-quarter earnings season. On Tuesday, Home Depot (NYSE:HD) reported earnings. Revenue of $27.22 billion increased 3.5% year over year, but missed estimates by $290 million. Third-quarter GAAP earnings of $2.53 per share were in line with estimates.

The Census Bureau’s New Residential Construction report was the only major release on the economic calendar. Housing Starts increased 3.8% in October to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.314 million. Building permits increased 5% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.461 million.

In the S&P 500, health care led gains and energy led losses. The S&P 500 technology sector was up 0.19% after the Trump administration announced a 90-day extension for Huawei business licenses yesterday. In the S&P 100, the following stocks led gains and losses:

  • Visa (NYSE:V) 1.70%
  • Mastercard (NYSE:MA) 1.60%
  • PayPal (NASDAQ:PYPL) 1.52%
  • Home Depot (NYSE:HD) -5.32%
  • AT&T (NYSE:T) -4.01%
  • Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) -2.80%

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,598.37 for a gain of 6.03 points or 0.38%. The S&P 600 closed at 980.21 for a gain of 1.55 points or 0.16%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Growth Index closed at 10,219.95 for a gain of 44.09 points or 0.43%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Value Index closed at 9,659.65 for a loss of 12.92 points or -0.13%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 2,001.34 for a gain of 3.43 points or 0.17%; the S&P 100 at 1,387.59 for a loss of 2.73 points or -0.20%; the Nasdaq 100 at 8,338.74 for a gain of 10.26 points or 0.12%; the Russell 3000 at 1,827.89 for a gain of 0.18 points or 0.0096%; the Russell 1000 at 1,724.53 for a loss of 0.26 points or 0.015%; the Wilshire 5000 at 31,874.17 for a gain of 0.76 points or 0.0024%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 734.13 for a loss of 6.26 points or -0.85%.
