US Indexes Close With Gains Monday

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 26,024.96 on Monday with a gain of 153.50 points or 0.59%. The S&P 500 closed at 3,117.86 for a gain of 20.12 points or 0.65%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 10,056.47 for a gain of 110.35 points or 1.11%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 31.94 for a loss of 3.18 points or -9.05%.

Investors were hopeful for a V-shaped recovery in trading Monday. New York City began its phase two reopening. Across the country, all states moved substantially further into reopening plans with much fewer restrictions. However, coronavirus cases have also been on the rise; 30,000 new cases were reported on Friday, the highest since May 1. Nevada, Florida, California and Arizona have been leading recent resurgences with record high infections in their states.

In other news:

  • Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) gained 2.62% Monday, the first day of its virtual developers conference.
  • The Chicago Fed National Activity Index improved to 2.61 in May from -17.89.
  • Existing home sales decreased 9.7% in May to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 3.91 million.
  • The Treasury held auctions for three-month bills at a rate of 0.155% and six-month bills at a rate of 0.175%.

In the S&P 500, technology and consumer discretionary led gains. In the S&P 100, the following stocks led gains:

  • PayPal (NASDAQ:PYPL) +3.57%
  • Nike (NYSE:NKE) +3.54%
  • Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) +3.07%
  • Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) +2.62%
  • Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) +2.56%
  • Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) +2.48%

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,433.50 for a gain of 14.86 points or 1.05%. The S&P 600 closed at 825.08 for a gain of 6.32 points or 0.77%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Growth Index closed at 9969.05 for a gain of 104.71 points or 1.06%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Value Index closed at 6,959.03 for a loss of 4.02 points or -0.06%.
