US Indexes Continue Rally and Close Higher Thursday

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 29,379.77 on Thursday with a gain of 88.92 points or 0.30%. The S&P 500 closed at 3,345.78 for a gain of 11.09 points or 0.33%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 9,572.15 for a gain of 63.47 points or 0.67%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 14.96 for a loss of 0.19 points or -1.25%.

U.S. indexes closed higher for a fourth day in a row on Thursday. China announced it would be reducing tariff rates on $75 billion worth of goods. Investors were also watching estimates on tomorrow’s jobs report, expecting 164,000 new payrolls.

On the earnings calendar, top headlines included:

  • Twitter (NYSE:TWTR): Revenue of $1.01 billion increased 11.1% year over year and beat estimates by $15.11 million. Fourth-quarter GAAP earnings of 15 cents per share missed estimates by 2 cents and non-GAAP earnings of 25 cents per share missed by 2 cents.
  • Uber (NYSE:UBER): Revenue of $4.07 billion increased 37.0% year over year and beat estimates by $10 million. The fourth-quarter GAAP earnings loss of 64 cents per share beat estimates by 4 cents.

In other news:

  • Casper Sleep (NYSE:CSPR) gained 13% in its initial public offering.
  • Mortgage rates were lower, according to Freddie Mac’s weekly mortgage market survey. The 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 3.45%, down from 3.51%. The 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 2.97%, down from 3.00%.
  • Jobless Claims were 202,000, down from 217,000. Continuing jobless claims increased to 1,751,000 from 1,703,000.
  • Nonfarm Productivity increased 1.4% in the fourth quarter and unit labor costs increased 1.4%.
  • The Treasury held auctions for 4-week bills at a rate of 1.54% and 8-week bills at a rate of 1.55%.

In the S&P 500, technology and real estate led gains. In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

  • Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) 2.26%
  • Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) 1.25%
  • Disney (NYSE:DIS) 0.94%
  • Walgreens Boots Alliance (NASDAQ:WBA) 0.94%
  • Verizon (NYSE:VZ) 0.52%

The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Growth Index closed at 10,841.62 for a loss of 16.76 points or -0.15%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Value Index closed at 9,744.34 for a loss of 58.74 points or -0.60%.
