US Indexes End With Gains Monday

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 23,749.76 on Monday with a gain of 26.07 points or 0.11%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,842.74 for a gain of 12.03 points or 0.42%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 8,710.71 for a gain of 105.77 points or 1.23%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 35.93 for a loss of 1.26 points or -3.39%.

The major U.S. indexes ended higher Monday with gains capped by new U.S. and China tariff tensions. President Trump has threatened to impose new tariffs and other penalties for Chinese imports in retaliation for China’s role in the coronavirus outbreak.

In the oil market, rising oil prices contributed to the day’s gains. WTI crude oil gained 8.09% to $21.38. In the S&P 500, energy led gains with a return of 3.46%.

Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A)(BRK.B) released its first-quarter earnings results Saturday. Revenue of $61.27 billion increased 1.0% year over year and missed estimates by $1.87 billion. Earnings per A share were -$30,652 and earnings per B share were -$20.44. Buffett said Berkshire is selling airline stocks.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • Total vehicle sales are on track to beat the consensus estimate for April of 7.1 million Preliminary data shows total vehicle sales of 8.6 million on a seasonally adjusted annual basis.
  • Factory orders decreased 10.3% in March. Factory orders excluding transportation decreased 3.7%.
  • The Treasury held auctions for three-month bills at a rate of 0.110%, six-month bills at a rate of 0.130% and 105-day bills at a rate of 0.115%. The 10-year Treasury ended with a yield of 0.630%.

In the S&P 100, the following stocks led gains:

  • Exxon (NYSE:XOM) 4.03%
  • Target (NYSE:TGT) 3.22%
  • ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) 3.12%
  • Schlumberger (NYSE:SLB) 3.05%
  • Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) 3.01%
  • NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA) 2.87%
  • Lowe’s (NYSE:LOW) 2.77%
  • Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) 2.45%
  • PayPal (NASDAQ:PYPL) 2.39%
  • Chevron (NYSE:CVX) 2.10%
  • Halliburton (NYSE:HAL) 2.05%

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,263.97 for a gain of 3.49 points or 0.28%. The S&P 600 closed at 736.02 for a loss of 4.00 points or -0.54%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Growth Index closed at 8,581.24 for a gain of 41.45 points or 0.49%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Value Index closed at 6,323.36 for a loss of 40.50 points or -0.64%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,591.50 for a gain of 1.02 points or 0.064%; the S&P 100 at 1,307.81 for a gain of 5.65 points or 0.43%; the Nasdaq 100 at 8,834.11 for a gain of 115.93 points or 1.33%; the Russell 3000 at 1,643.20 for a gain of 7.61 points or 0.47%; the Russell 1000 at 1,563.20 for a gain of 7.42 points or 0.48%; the Wilshire 5000 at 28,731.78 for a gain of 131.97 points or 0.46%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 557.62 for a gain of 0.60 points or 0.11%.
